    Southland Tales

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sean William Scott, Kevin Smith und The Rock...

    Öhm ja...

Im entsprechenden IMDB Forum hat jemand eine Art FAQ gepostet, die alle (Un)Klarheit beseitigen sollte:

Because the boards are getting overrun with Southland Tales questions that have either been asked before or have no known answer at this time, I decided to take a minute and write up an FAQ for the film, since they seem to work well on other boards. I am not in any way affiliated with the filmmakers and this is in no way an official FAQ. This is simply my summation of what I have read on http://www.richard-kelly.net and in interviews with the people making Southland Tales.

If you guys would kindly bump it up to the top every now and again so that new people can get a chance to read it, that would be great.

Southland Tales is Richard Kelly's second directorial feature. Kelly is best known (by all who have great taste in movies) for his first feature film, Donnie Darko. Not familiar with it? Leave and go immediately to your local video store and rent it because you are truly missing out!!

Now, for the questions (NOTE: this is a little lengthy, but worth the read if you need more info about the film):

    * * *

Q: What is this film about anyway??

    A. The kind people at IMDB have offered this as a plot outline: “A musical/comedy set in 2008 where a three-day heat wave in Los Angeles culminates in a huge Fourth of July party”. A press release (http://richard-kelly.net/news/2005/4-20-2005.html) in April 2005 had this to add: “Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster… (The film will follow) Boxer Santaros, an action star stricken with amnesia whose life intertwines with Krysta Now, an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and David Clark, a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy”. The Rock (one of the actors in the film, more on that below) gave us a few more tidbits in this interview: http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles ... tory.jhtml. In it, he says that the film deals with the frightening notion that "if the world came to an end, it's going to end first in L.A.". He also says that his character "can actually foresee the ending of the world" and has to confront the ensuing chaos as the moment grows nearer.

    Q: Uh, that doesn't tell me much…

    A. Yeah, that’s true. The film is being kept pretty much under wraps. But, with a bit of detective work, we also know this: 2008 is an election year (this MAY play a role in the film, though this has not been confirmed), the film’s website shows a lot of political figures from the past (i.e. Karl Marx) and present (John Ashcroft), Ron Cobb (http://imdb.com/name/nm0167803/) has signed on to be a conceptual artist for the film (he designed the Delorian in Back to the Future, yo!), and Kelly has said his influences for the film were Pulp Fiction, Brazil, and Dr. Strangelove. He also said (http://richard-kelly.net/news/2005/4-20-2005.html) “The film is going to be a strange hybrid of the sensibilities of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick.” Most recently, Kelly said that the poem "The Hollow Men" by TS Elliot also plays a role. The last lines are:

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but with a whimper

Kelly said (http://movies.about.com/od/domino/a/domino072005_3.htm): "And in a movie starring The Rock, you can’t end the world with a whimper. It needs to end with a bang. So that’s what the movie’s about.”

    Q. Wait just one minute… Southland Tales is a musical??? I am so out of here!

    A. Hold your horses there, Hoss. While Southland Tales does have some musical elements, Kelly himself said that the “musical” thing is being blown WAY out of proportion. In an interview (http://www.moviepoopshoot.com/renaissance/62.html) Kelly says: “I hope it’s a very suspenseful film, but at the same time, there are going to be dance numbers and people singing occasionally. It won't be done traditionally, though. It’s not GUYS AND DOLLS. It’s much more sort of…COPS AND PORN STARS. [Laughs] I'm trying to design a musical for people that hate musicals. I'm not a big musical guy. I'm fond of them, though.” He also described the film as 30% comedy, 30% musical, 30% thriller, and 10% science fiction. That said, Southland Tales should have a little bit of everything. It’s gonna be a film for the masses!

    Q. This musical thing still worries me. I mean, will people just burst into song for no reason? Because, that’s pretty lame!

    A. Well, would a quote from Kevin Smith help? He will be one of the many cast members and he said on his site http://www.viewaskew.com: “The singing in ‘Southland’ is just something that happens during the course of the plot, as opposed to, say, in ‘Magnolia’ - in which the singing is used in a more esoteric fashion, and seems to take place outside of the plot.” Also according to http://www.viewaskew.com, Kevin LOVES the script. He says it's not really a musical and he seems really excited about the project.

    Q. Well, OK, who else is in it?

    A. Good question. There has been lots of gossip about the cast of this film, most of which has been proven false over the past year or so. Thus far, the only actors to be confirmed by the filmmakers are Seann William Scott (who will play David Clark), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Krysta Now), Kevin Smith (who will play an Iraqi war veteran named Simon Theory who lost his legs and will be in a wheelchair for the film) and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Boxer Santaros). In this article, http://www.whedon.info/article.php3?id_article=3797, as of March 27, 2004, Jason Lee, Janeane Garofalo, Tim Blake Nelson, Amy Poehler and Ali Larter were also in negotiations to star in the film. Since it’s been well over a year now since any of these names were mentioned in the same breath as ST, some of these names may have been added or subtracted since then. As the film’s start date approaches, we fans should receive more info about the cast.

    Q. But, what about Kristen Stewart? And Maggie Gyllenhaal? And Lalaine? And Evan Rachel Wood? And Brian O'Halloran???

    A. The other names added and dropped to the IMDB page have either not been confirmed by the people making the film or are just rumors created by whoever for whatever reason. Don't believe everything that you read on IMDB. Again, hopefully another official announcement about the cast should be made relatively soon.

    Q. We have another problem…The Rock AND Sarah Michelle Gellar AND Seann William Scott??? What is this, Scooby Doo Wrestles an American Pie 4?!?

    A. Uh, no. Kelly said in an interview (http://movies.about.com/library/weekly/ ... 72404a.htm) that “I like to surprise people and to take an actor who hasn't had a chance to probably show their full range, and to surprise people. I'm excited to work with people who show different dimensions to a performance. I'm going to be working with a lot of actors in this film and, for me, I never think about what an actor has done before. I don't judge someone based on the kinds of movies they've been in before.” So, as Kelly said (here: http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=18334): “Don't judge a book by it's cover. Get ready for some surprises. Keep an open mind. Trust me. I won't disappoint you. You have no idea.”

    Q. Does Southland Tales have an official website?

    A. Yep: http://www.southlandtales.com. There are also a few more sites associated with the film that we should also keep an eye on: http://www.usident.org, http://www.krysta-now.com(which has already been integrated into the main site) and http://www.treer-products.com (which contains a seriously disturbing clip that must be seen to believe). There is not much on these sites now, but updates are expected, as are more sites connected with the film.

    Q. Oooh, the main site is really good, very spooky. This doesn't look like a comedy…

    A. Yeah, the site is chock full of cryptic messages and puzzles. It is incomplete for now and is updated from time to time so maybe the new stuff will be lighter. Again, keep in mind that the film will only be 30% comedy. And also expect a lot more stuff to be added to the site. Kelly and Co. have boasted (http://richard-kelly.net/news/2005/4-20-2005.html): “…the film's official website will be one of the largest and most elaborate ever designed for a feature film.”

    Q. That music is GOOD. Who is responsible for it and where can I buy it?

    A. Moby provided the original music for the site and it is, alas, only available to listen to there. But, we do know the song is called "Rose Petals" and it will be in the film ( http://movies.about.com/od/domino/a/domino072005_3.htm). Moby is also working on the rest of the score. No, I haven't heard it, but I have heard it’s really, really good!

    Q. Isn't Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails doing some music?

    A. That was the rumor. It has, unfortunately, not been confirmed.

    Q. Alright, when and where will this film be shot?

    A. Filming starts August 15th and will be shot all over the LA area with maybe a few parts filmed elsewhere (perhaps even so other states). Some shots of Kelly location scouting can be found here: http://richard-kelly.net/news/2005/6-16-2005.html.

    Q. You mean, they haven't even STARTED shooting yet???

    A. In truth, they did shoot some footage over 4th of July weekend last year but that was all that has been confirmed.

    Q. So, when will it be released then?

    A. Looks like we should expect the film sometime next year, maybe summer, possibly even later. But, the graphic novels will be released early next year.

    Q. Graphic novels? What are you talking about???

    A. Southland Tales will not be just a movie. Oh no, this, my friends, is going to be a multi-media experience. According to the press release (http://richard-kelly.net/news/2005/4-20-2005.html): “…an expanded version of Southland Tales will be presented as a nine-part interactive experience with the prequel saga to be published as six separate 100 page graphic novels, each written by Kelly. The graphic novels will be released over a six month period early next year leading up to the film's release with the feature film comprised of the story's final three chapters.” Recently, Kelly and the gang have released a press release saying that the graphic novels will be released within the first quarter of 2006 (http://www.freezedriedmovies.com/news/i ... ewsID=3108). According to Kelly, "The novels will give the die-hard fans more of an understanding of the back-story leading up the film's theatrical release."

    Q. Sounds complicated…

    A. Yeah, maybe a little. But, if you're not interested in reading the graphic novels, that’s OK, the film should make sense without them. But, as Kelly said here: http://richard-kelly.net/news/2005/4-20-2005.html “The graphic novels will work in tandem with the website, creating a more epic multimedia experience for those interested in taking the plunge."

    * * *

So, there you go. If I left out something important, let me know and it will be added. As new information becomes available, I'll add that too! Be sure to check out http://www.richard-kelly.net too. The folks there are well-informed and very nice. And if anyone runs across an article or interview about Richard Kelly, Southland Tales or any of his other projects, feel free to send the link to http://www.richard-kelly.net. This will make their job a lot easier and will help others (like me!!) stay up-to-date on the latest news. Have a great day!

Bin echt gespannt, was uns da erwartet.
